"Kjell spots something in the water. Dark shape beneath the surface, as large as the boat." Konrad related. "I thought it best to warn someone without making too much of a fuss."

"Probably wise." She answered, but looked to the captain and Zavier. This was far out of her depth.

Silvia strode on deck with her lute slung over her shoulder. She was quietly humming the tune of 'Married to a Mermaid' as she sauntered across the deck to the rail.

As they talk the shape gets closer and closer to the surface until it rises out of the water. It appears to be some sort of gigantic shark but four times as long as any shark they’ve ever heard of. The captain uses his looking glass and then lowers it silently. The huge maw faces the ship with teeth a foot long, but after a moment even the most myopic of the crew can see why the captain’s jaw was slack. The entire back half of the mighty fish is missing. Something had bitten it in half.

Kjell blinked a few times at the sight of the carcass and half-turned to look at the rest of the crew nearby, one arm still leaned on the railing. "Should've brought a bigger boat," she said.

Silvia stared in fascination as the great fish emerged, and gasped when she saw that half its body was missing. She wondered if the creature had been attacked by another of its own species...or by something worse.

Ceutine's eyes went wide and her grip tightened on the railing. "Maybe it's sated. Otherwise why leave half a meal?"

“You still excited to face that serpent my dear?” Konrad shouted to Silvia with a chuckle.

She steeled herself and faced him with a devil-may-care grin that didn't reach her eyes. "Always," she lied. "Don't worry, I'm not the kind of blowhard that will declare myself frightened of nothing, and I won't rush in to the kill like I'm invincible, but this..."
She waved vaguely at the mutilated shark.
"This is the sort of thing I came for. The money will be useful, I don't doubt it, but there are a thousand easier ways to get money. Experiences like this only come along once a lifetime for landlubbers like us."

Kjell glanced at the other elf. “If that thing is its lunch, it is probably too big to pay us attention. As long as we’re quiet, we are likely go-“ she was briefly cut off by Konrad shouting on the deck “-be fine.”

The tension of the mysterious was nerve-wracking. But seeing that the beast was flesh and blood and ate it’s meals, even if they were large, was something of a relief. And anyway Silvia’s confidence was contagious.

"A few words can't be enough for it to bother," Ceutinde stage-whispered to Kjell, "Can they?" Realizing her state of mind, she began a breathing exercise to try and calm herself. If only that laudanum wasn't down in the hold.

“Nah,” she said after another quick glance. “I meant cannons and such.” It was probably not going to help if she were to mention cannons would be useless against a mist monster of this calibre anyway, so she kept that to herself.

Fortunately, they had the Wild Huntsman aboard. Herneiros had taken one look at the dead shark and began preparing his bow and arrows like some tribal hunter in one of those Nigel Thornheart stories.
"I do not believe that this Serpent is of the Mist though. Still... I have never had to fire an arrow through water."
He methodically inspected a perfectly ordinary arrow in the light. "Still... I think we will be fine."

Zavier went to the rails and looked over. The adventurers on the deck heard a loud creaking sound coming from somewhere in the limitless depths, like a long mournful horn being blown. The fish all began scattering to the safety of the great reef. Konrad and Kjell both see some odd tadpole-like shapes swimming through the waters and slowly rising. They look like nothing either of them have seen.
