“I don’t see how it could have been your fault. I’m not really sure what happened either but I can put two and two together.” She went to drink more of the mead, bringing it halfway to her lips and then changing her mind and putting it down instead. She met his eyes steadily. “Just...I don’t know. Thanks for realizing we’re different people. Nevermind.”

Konrad put his hand on top of Justine's on the bar. He dare not say what he was thinking which was, you aren't actually separate people. Instead he said, "I thought... perhaps if I just treated her like anyone else, without judgement, it might help her feel less lonely and... you'll forgive me, but just give her a moment of normalcy without feeling suspicion or fear. Mayhaps I should have been a bit more wary, that's all."

]He doesn’t sense any danger; this place is as close to safe as anywhere off the Odyssey is likely to be. “She goes by the Black Rose, I think her actual name is Rose but you can never tell with these people,” Tejuani said. “Her ship’s the only one even close to that frigate you all fit in here’s size. Supposedly she stole it from some Innurian noble while he was actually on it. Seems a worthy heist to me.” "I knew a Rose once. She let me pose as one of her servants for three weeks at Count Daggerhart's holdings. I wanted access to his inner vaults because of a jeweled music box he had discovered, and Rose wanted night after night of pure bliss." He smiled at the memory, "She was a hard negotiator, but I think we both were satisfied with the results." He took a long sip of the brew and savored it. "Has this Black Rose angered you in some manner? You certainly seem eager for me to visit her. Most people expect a cut after sharing so much information."

Whenever I think she’s gone...there she is.” She turned her hand beneath his on the bar and wrapped her fingers around his hand tightly. “You’re kind. Also, I doubt she would kill you.”

We can call it even. I like the lady, all told. I just find it tragic when a king doesn’t have a queen.” She winked and slid him another mead. “Hard to have princes and princesses that way.”

That made him smile, "Well that's a relief at least," he said, "and I certainly harbor no ill-will," he added.
No, whatever he felt towards Juliette could not be described as "ill will." "When you say different? Do you mean at Lockheart? We don't have to talk about it, if you don't want to, but... Well, Wolfhaven has bordered the asylum for many many years. If there's anyone who has got a hope of understanding what it was like, I hopes it me."

Well that is a horse of another color." He leaned forward in his seat and raised a single dark eyebrow, "Alright if you are trying to join our two houses together then I need to have some idea of her assets." He chuckled at his own word play because he knew no one else would appreciate appropriately.

The teak bar owner chuckled. “Let’s just say the lands come with two towers and a diamond mine.” She blew him a kiss. “Now my dear, I do have other customers. The ones just arriving have to pay the latecomer tax of paying for their first drinks twice.”

Damien slams a gold down on the bar and stands up. He turned and walked out into the night and disappeared into the shadows.

Even here she felt suddenly stalked by the long-reaching eyes and corpse-cold fingers of the asylum minders. She swallowed a bit more of the honey wine, lowered her voice, and leaned toward him. “I do mean at Lockhart. It’s funny, I feel she’s always been there. It’s like we were really born together. But in all the pictures I’ve ever seen of my family, there is only one with my face.” “How do you stand living so near a place like that?”

"With many men-at-arms sworn to my defense," Konrad said, "And even then, it's enough to keep you up at night when the wind blows cold and the wolves howl." He brushed a stray hair back behind her ear, "We know the Lockharts play with strange magics on the minds of their victims. Their sick games have finally strained the good will of the Imperial court. Perhaps by the time we return we may finally have a chance to punish them for what they did."

When he touched her hair it brought a slight flush of color to her cheeks. The last time she had been in Wolfhaven she was fleeing, Demetri at her side. She had had no chance or even thought to see the color of Konrad’s eyes. But she wouldn’t let herself get ahead of...herself. “Do you really think...? The place should be burned to the ground. Let the rubble of the stones bury its secrets forever. Put every member of the Lockhart family to the sword. Cut them...” Her eyes gleamed a little brighter and her expression changed ever so slightly. “Cut them... Cut them down to size.” It was only Justine after all.

“I think perhaps if we are fortunate,” he said. If he took note of her sudden stutter he did not betray concern. “Between the things I have already documented and... what you know, perhaps we could finally convinced them imperial court to do away with them. I had reason to believe they had fallen from favor. Even before I departed.” He said.
“How is your beverage, should we have another or perhaps shall we explore further this little cove and whatever it has to offer?”

Sometimes I’m glad I never had to go to court...but perhaps if I had, I could’ve talked to the serpent, too.” She took her hand back and pushed her hair back from her forehead. She raised her glass again to him and downed it in one. She felt a bit restless. Too long in one place could be anxiety inducing. “Let’s go. I’ve never been in a place quite like this. All ropes and swaying bridges. I wonder how many drunkards they lose every evening?”

Post by Nigel Thornheart on Jul 10, 2020 22:03:57 GMT
The primal and now familiar yawp of "Never fear! Nigel Thornheart is here!" thundered outside the brewery before an armored boot nearly kicked the front door off its hinges, revealing the Adventurer Extraordinaire in all his glory. The last time he had been here, Tejuani’s Brewery had been a tent with a grog barrel inside. But with renewed interest in Battling with Brigands, adventurer tourism in the region had flourished and with it new plunder available to the local pirates, leading to rapid expansion. Though Nigel took credit for stemming the brigand threat to the shores Innuria, he had likely helped turn desperate scalawags into pirate lords.
"Justine!" he called across the bar, before approaching and giving her ass a hard slap. "It is a dangerous game you play bringing so much booty into a pirate den. Aha!" He turned his attention to Konrad then. "Little Wolfhaven! How are you enjoying your first adventure? You know, your father and I fought side by side on countless occasions. Many of the tales in Riding with Reclaimers were inspired from our adventures together." While Nigel did change the names of those depicted in his novels for liability reasons, he infamously did so in the most lazily transparent of ways. It did not take a genius to surmise who the character Jax Doghouse was based off of.
