Justine was lucky to have finished her drink before Nigel turned up, or that slap would’ve seen her covered in sticky mead. The humidity and mosquitos would have loved that. She rubbed her bottom and scowled. “ Hello there, Mr Thornheart. We were just leaving, weren’t we?” She looked up at Konrad before smiling half heartedly at Nigel.
“I didn’t realize you knew Konrad’s father. I guess we’ll all be in the next book, then? This is sure to shape up into a worthy adventure...right?”

Konrad had stood up and his fingertips danced atop the hilt of his sword when Thornheart has so rudely laid his hands on Justine’s rear. But the lady had chosen to handle it with grace, and so young lord Wolfhaven did not comment, but bit his tongue enough to draw some small blood.
“Yes so sorry we shall miss you,” he said through clenched teeth, “I can recommend their dark ale though, if you have a taste for quality.”

"Nonsense, I know it can be a little daunting having a drink with a living legend, but I am a man just like you. I put on my pants three legs at a time just like anyone else. Aha!" he put an arm around Konrad and Justine's shoulders like they were old friends while ordering another round from the bartender. "Let me regale you with some stories of your old man, little Wolfhaven. Finest Reclaimer I ever met, that man. And your mother the finest Reclaimette." In Bastion, a Reclaimette was what one called a woman that preferred and sought out the company of Reclaimers.

Once again, she was fortunate when it came to Nigel: Justine had spent many years in seedier and worse parts of the world than even this pirate town and she knew how to escape unwanted attention. She turned herself out of his grasp. “Thank you, but no. I’m sure you have many thrilling tales to tell but we are on a tight timetable. We have to see a man about a...a parrot. Konrad has taken an interest in birding.”

“Yes, what use is being in a pirate haven if you can’t have a parrot!” He exclaimed a smile creeping on his face. The slight about his mother temporarily blotted out by Justine’s absurd yet amusing lie.

"Your father and I did our fair share of birding as well," Nigel winked, unfazed by the clear attempt to abandon him, nudging Konrad in the ribs to indicate he was not talking about the feathered variety. "We bagged exotic birds from one end of Innuria to the other and always looked dashing while we did it. "

“Is that so?”
Clearly this was some attempt at baiting a reaction from one or both of them. “Well you’ve got to be exceedingly quiet to see the birds here so I think you are disqualified, Mr Thornheart. Good day.”
Justine boldly grabbed Konrad’s hand and began walking quickly for the door.

"Quite so," he answered the question, ignoring the rest as he kept his grip around Konrad's shoulder firm. "Some nights if we fancied the same bird, we'd introduce her to the old Devil's Triangle for a real thrill." He looked from Konrad to Justine, apparently nostalgic to relive glories past.

Konrad scowled, as he was nearly dragged out of the brewery before trouble could commence.
“That...man.” he whispered to Justine as they went clearly unable to produce a response commensurate with his outrage.

"There you are! I've been looking everywhere!" Konrad and Justine heard from their side, where Ceutinde was walking quickly toward them, a couple of sailors behind her. "Konrad, I need to borrow some money. You'll get it back. And then we might need to kill some people."

“I’m burning his book when I get back to the ship,” she reassured him in a similarly hushed voice. “It’s hard to imagine your father being friends with him...not that I knew your father...oh!”
Once again they were surprised to meet a companion from the ship. This time, Justine at least was much more pleased. She dropped Konrad’s hand in an instant, cheeks coloring a little. “Ceutinde, has something happened?”

"Konrad, I need to borrow some money. You'll get it back. And then we might need to kill some people." Konrad blinked. “I think you’ll need to slow down and explain each portion of that. How much money? For what? And which people?”

If she slowed down, it was only by a hair. "Well, I'm supposed to have nine hundred. It doesn't need to be exactly that, it just needs to convincingly look like that. To buy a brothel. But then we double-cross the slaving...bastards." Cursing clearly did not come naturally. "Not that it's really double-crossing when you're dealing with slaving bastards. They're coming to the ship in the morning. Then we'll need to deal with those still at the brothel, let the girls get off to a good start."

“Slaves in a brothel?” She shuddered. She was no fan of anyone being held against their will for personal reasons, but to be forced in this way... “We could just start a fire and pick them off one by one as they come out. No need to bother with the coin.”

“I see your point.” Konrad told the elf. “Although i think we shall need far more than just the three of us. And then where do we go? We can not sail away with a huge population of freed slaves. And then of course it is liable to provoke a fight with every pirate on the Island. I would be inclined to help you, but we need a fuller plan.”
