She reached for the jewel and stowed it inside the bag she had brought for the purpose (she had concealed it in her bodice as extra padding). Then she held the bag up to see whether the jewel was still glowing.

It’s still glowing, just not bright enough to be seen through the bag unless the laces were to somehow come undone.

She tied it securely then attached the bag to a special belt she wore beneath her flowing skirts, which was perfect for concealing such treasures. After all, she had no plans to lift her skirts that night. Then she headed back out to the party.

She had slipped out, smooth, nothing out of place. She had made it back to her drink before she realized one tiny issue: the Stone was still leaking whatever fog it produced. It wasn’t much but if she stood still it only took fove or six seconds to be noticeable. She’d have to move fast.

Wincing, she made for the exit. She exchanged a smile here, a wink there, and tried to make it seem as though she was just threading her way through the crowd.

A few seconds after she started heading for the exit she heard shouting. The theft had been discovered. “Sea or off!” She heard Nicolai snarl from fifty feet away. “No one leaves!” Men head towards the gate. She’s only got a moment to decide to flee.

Silvia made some gagging noises as she simulate sickness.
"Sorry, got to run or this place will be covered in vomit," she said. Then she took off for the exit once more, running as fast as she could. It wasn't the way she wanted to end the night, but it would be worth it if it worked.

The unorthodox diversion had worked, but only because someone had shouted “it’s over here” as she had run. The guards had chased the sound of the voice for only a moment, but Silvia only needed a moment to put her speed to work and she had slipped out. A guard had attempted to follow her but she was in and among the crowds within a few seconds.

Once she was safely out of the place, she stopped in a quiet place and pulled the carefully-arranged ringlets out of shape from her wig and deliberately messed up the locks, just in case, then started for her accommodation.

When she had reached her room, the gem flowed brighter and brighter, nearly uncontrollable, and the strange fog it emitted continued to flow unabated by time. She had thought then she had escaped unnoticed. She at least had lived to realize her error.
The handsome man had waited there, seated at her table with a cup of water in his hand. “Excellent work, Johanna,” he said with his bright smile. “Nicolai has suffered a great blow to his...prestige tonight. And his friends will be quite unhappy.”

His appearance started her, and angered her too - how dare he enter her quarters without permission - but she forced herself to smile at him. "I'm happy to hear that. It wasn't the easiest job I've ever done."

“I would think not,” he said in his pleasant voice that now felt more condescending than charming. He slid a bag that clinked with gold and the signed paper to her. “But you’ve done the Empire a great service,” he added. “Nicolai can track the gem so hand it over so I can seal it away, please.”

She hefted the bag of gold to check the weight then picked up the signed paper to check the accuracy of it.

It all looked good. The handsome man tipped his hat to her and slid out the window of her flat like an octopus clutching the jewel. She had never seen him again.
