The soldier shrugged. “They came in not long ago,” she said, “sick as hell and scared the shit out of everyone. Most of them died right off, but some lingered an hour or so and talked about the fish people who got them sick or something. They were clearly delirious.”

"How much of that do you believe?" Silvia asked, attempting to keep the question neutral in tone. "Do you believe these fish people are a real danger to us?"

The soldier laughed. “Not to me,” she said. “I dodge the ocean like it’s poison. But then, I never got a taste for seafood. My advice is stay away and leave the monsters to the professionals.” Clearly she didn’t know who she was talking to.

"Perhaps," Silvia mused. "Is there anything else you know? My...friends will be interested."

Callista shook her head. “If you’re the curious sort, you should find out whoever got those poor bastards here. There’s no way they rode all this way themselves.”

Silvia frowned. "I imagine not. But do they have mounts, then? Was there anything suspicious about their arrival beyond the distance?"

“Just the distance,” Callisto said. “That town’s over a hundred miles away. They looked way too sick to make such a journey even if they had horses...which I don’t believe they did. They got dropped off in a big carriage.”

Silviz whistled. "That's very odd. And nobody knows who sent the carriage here, or why? Does the carriage have a noble crest on it, or other identifying marks?"

The soldier shook her head. “I won’t lie, I didn’t pay attention. Until I saw the sorry state the peasants were in it really didn’t seem relevant at the time.”

"That's fair enough. What about the driver? Are they still around?"

Callista nodded. “I think so...wait, where did the carriage go?” She asked. Her fellow guards seemed confused too. “They were here not ten minutes ago.”

"Damn," Silvia muttered. "Perhaps someone knows the direction it left in, though? Someone must have seen something."
