A two hundred foot tall silvery tower where the Mistress of the Academy lives. Mariya d’Argentan is the final authority in sorcery’s matters on the peninsula.

As no progress had been made discerning the nature of the globes during the voyage, Nigel escorted them to the academy along with anyone that wished to accompany him to request a meeting with Mariya D’Argentan in hopes of settling the matter.

The adventurers are ushered into the main waiting area while the two women who greet them head off to summon the Mistress. Another younger girl brings a tray with some hors d’oeuvres on it to snack on while they wait. Prawns and cheese stuff mushrooms with white wine make the ten minutes or so pass pleasantly.
Mariya d’Argentan descended the stairs shortly, holding her silver staff. It makes a metallic clink every time it touched the marble floors but she took no notice of it. “Sir Nigel,” she said politely, “good to see you again. I’d heard you went to do...research for a new book,” she glanced sickly toward the women around him. Elise shrugged almost imperceptibly. “Mistress Thalia, I was told to expect you. And of course Madame Ceutinde! It has been too long!” Her black hair has a few silvery streaks in it but her expression is friendly. “Whatever could you possibly need me for?”

Tehol is there until the figure out what the orbs are worth and he gets his share if they sell them.

Nigel greeted the archmage with a bow. “You heard correct! When the people yearn for adventure, Nigel Thornheart must oblige.” He struck his customary heroic pose for a beat before continuing. “My companions and I chanced upon a pair of strange artifacts during our latest adventure and were hoping the greatest mage in bastion could enlighten us as to their origins and purpose.”

The Adventurer Extraordinare found himself accompanied by the (second) greatest known wizard from the Mist-ravaged continent. Herneiros was mildly curious about the globes and supporting his allies, but mostly just wanted to know what city wizards were like. How often did they bathe? How regular was archery practice? Did city wizards favor other martial arts, like the mace or perhaps unarmed combat like the storied Mist Hunter Bearbeater Bergeros? Was rank based on how many ancient abominations you had slain, or did you merely have to have survived the experience? Were dirty jokes carefully memorized, or was it a sign of maturity that you could craft your own in honor of Lady Ceutinde's phenomenal physique? Herneiros had lofty cultural standards as he compared the Academy to the Mist Hunters he had grown up with.

Thalia glanced at Nigel, then back to Mariya, she guessed that Melreth had told her she was coming. “I studied the globes on the ship, but without any equipment couldn’t discern their meaning, I was hoping I could use your laboratory to find out their meaning, and if you could offer any assistance that would be greatly appreciated,” Thalia said to her, inclining her head to her respectfully.

The mage returned the nod. “Of course,” she said. “I should like to see these globes.” She turned and shouted up the stairs. “Meredith dear, do get the lab cleaned please. Empty it of anything unnecessary.”

Silvia tagged along as well. She had a lively curiosity and it seemed a good idea to find out what the orbs did.

Thalia got them out, and showed them, at least her one, “any initial observations?” She asked her, holding it out,

Mariya looked at it then gingerly held one. “Well,” she said, “my initial thought is you’ve found something completely unique. I sense very strong abjuration magic and...” she frowned. “I hope you don’t have anything important,” she told Thalia. “I think we have some work to do. Do you mind if I bring in some of our specialists?” She asked the question to the group. “I have a theory for what they could be but I’d prefer not voicing a theory that’s so ludicrous.”

“That’s what we’re here for. Work your magic,” Nigel said, as he grabbed a handful of prawns. “Though I am curious what your ludicrous theory is?”

Silvia sipped a glass of wine. She knew little of magic, and less of the globes, so she was content to observe, at least until they knew more about their purpose. She leaned close to Thalia and whispered "Shouldn't we find out if there's a price, first? In my experience, specalist advice doesn't come free."

Thalia thought she’d like to hear it, “I’d like all experiments to be run by me, anything that might damage them, shouldn’t be performed.” Thalia said looking at her, but nodding. “I think in this case the lady means other academics, if your academy is state funded. She did say our specialists, but if there’s a price I’ll pay,” Thalia waved it’s off as no concern. If they tried to pull anything, she’d burn the whole district to the ground. She doubted the academics here would want to cross Melreth.

Mariya was too busy inspecting the globe to worry about the talk around her. “My initial belief is this is a sort of pocket dimension,” she said. “And this child’s toy is in fact a piece of a world. The power to create something like this is flatly unimaginable. Wherever did you find these?”
