“That Is an interesting theory, can I ask what it is based off of?” She asked, not answering regarding the location just yet.

Mariya looked up. “In ancient times abjuration magic was believed to create its protective spells using other dimensions to redirect forces. There’s too much magic in here for a normal little orb to contain so my theory is that, like a bag of holding, this globe is an entrance to a much larger space...” she tried to think of how to say it, “somewhere else. Which means we may be able to travel into it.”

“Perhaps that’s where the people from the civilisations taken over by the mists went,” Thalia spit balled, “I do not recall seeing any human remains there really. It’s nit a good idea to investigate with preconceptions though.” She accepted.

“Exactly,” the arch mage confirmed. “Obviously I’m willing to devote a considerable amount of the Academy’s resources to unlocking these artifacts’ mysteries. They need to be kept safe. This much power will attract unwanted attention sooner rather than later.

Thalia’s eye twitched at the phrase kept safe, that usually meant kept with them, away from Lisandre. That could be sorted later, perhaps they could come to an agreement, but this was what she’d wanted to avoid, if these were very powerful she was concerned these brutes here in bastion might want to use it against her home land, rather than just the noble pursuit of academic advancement. “I’d be grateful for any assistance.”

“A capital idea!” Nigel proclaimed, at the suggestion they be kept safe if her theory was proven right. Clearly he had been correct in his hesitancy to entrust unknown items of potentially immense magical potential to any one individual...or sell them to barter for translations. “We would appreciate your help in discovering what they are and be grateful for any counsel regarding what should be done with them once their secrets have been unlocked.”

"But it should be noted that the orbs belong to our party," Silvia added, mostly for Thalia's benefit. "If they need to be held somewhere for safekeeping, we'd want some kind of surety."
She wanted to ask questions about what kind of world the orbs might contain but perhaps that wasn't the best idea as yet.

Mariya nodded to Nigel and then arched an eyebrow at Silvia. “Surety?” She repeated. “I’d be fascinated to hear what sort of collateral you all would expect. Lady Melreth will be sent regular reports on our discoveries. If you take these to your residences there’s a nonzero chance that eventually the spells will degrade and lead to some form of catastrophe.”

Thalia was grateful for Silvia speaking up, since the voyage had not been funded by the state at all, it would be inappropriate to hand them over for good, but what could the even give as collateral. She wasn’t too concerned, if bastion took something Melreth wanted she was certain the queen wouldn’t be long without them in her possession anyway. “Considering no one knows what they do, the sane could be said of here, Proper storage cannot really be decided on until we know what they are for certain and the magic used on them and in them. Can you tell if the abjuration is external or internal?”

Mariya shook her head. “Not without further study. This item has layer after layer of spells. Without more information it could take a lifetime to unlock. Our spells here will mitigate some of the potential disaster from these items.” She looked over the group. “I’ll talk to the governor,” she said, “and Mistress Thalia can consult with her Lady in Lisandre so we can ensure that the best method for unlocking these orbs’ secrets is revealed.”

Herneiros finally spoke. "Excuse me but... has anyone written anything about these other dimensions? Or attempted to traverse to them?"

Mariya shook her head and shrugged. “If they have, the research died centuries ago. All we have are half-cocked legends and a few stories of different worlds. Most of this research will be blind unless we find more information from somewhere else. Any further information you can find on these will only help the efforts to understand them.”

"Hmmm..." The country wizard stroked his beard, like Gandalf trying not to be condescending to the staff of Hogwarts. He had been crossing the boundaries of reality for a long time now, but it wasn't really something he could teach or explain to these academics.
"So this pocket dimension for ants... what if you simply threw it really hard at the ground and ran away very fast?"
Herneiros was not known as the Thoughtfully Cautious Huntsman for a reason.

Mariya just looked at him for a second, blinked, then turned back to Thalia. “Uh, it would probably do nothing,” she said. “Or it could, you know, destroy Innuria. There’s really no telling.” She let out a long breath and suddenly looked like she needed a drink.

"Shame... I suppose the thaumaturgical energy conversion inverse flux capacity principle would have to kick in at some point for such a big amount of transdimensional mojo... but if you don't have the learning here to do anything with it, wouldn't it be cost efficient to just ride out to some empty plain on the continent and sees if it pops out an enchanted city?"
Herneiros had always wanted to see an enchanted city... at least until he visited an actual city and found it far from enchanting.
