For once it was Nigel that looked embarrassed regarding his traveling companions.
“Forgive my compatriots, it was a harrowing adventure and you know how the Mist can play havoc with ones faculties,” Nigel interjected. “You can read all about it in my next book. I will be sure to send an advance copy for your assistance today and sing the praises of the Academy within its pages.”
Their voyage may not have been state funded, but as this item could put all of Innuria in jeopardy , it was a state matter now at an imperial level. “Do send my warmest regards to the governor when you inform him. If this item is such a potential threat, should the emperor not be informed?”

Mariya modded. “He’ll be informed when we have something concrete to inform him of. These orbs may not be dangerous at all. Best not to give bad news before you have something to...soften the blow.” She turned to Herneiros. “Honestly, if you thought you could unlock infinite power, you’d have kept it yourself. But you’re more than wise enough to see that some globes shouldn’t be thrown to the ground. What was your name again?”

And you would be surprised how many problems can be solved by breaking something magical. We had to break a different magic orb just to acquire these two."

“We had insight into it from its holder,” Thalia explained to Mariya, nit wanting her to think they were in the habit of smashing valuable orbs, “and we overpowered the abjuration magic, we didn’t physically just break it. I will talk to the queen, I am sure an arrangement can be made that suits all parties.” She imagined the end result would be innuria keeping one and the other going to the queen anyway, if you have two huge bombs, better to keep them apart.

Mariya nodded. “Good. I’ll have the abjurers begin creating a protective circle to study these in immediately.” She turned towards the others. “I appreciate you all bringing these to the Academy. If there’s anything we can assist you with don’t hesitate to ask.” There’s no chance she won’t regret that last remark.

“Don’t forget, I was to be part of the examination” Thalia said, looking at Mariya, in case she had forgotten.

After speaking with Melreth, Thalia returned to begin investigations, showing the pass she’d got to ensure it was actually valid, she did not not trust these foreign magicians, but she also had no reaso pn to trust them, so until that time she would be cautious. She asked to speak with Mariya again, as she did not know who would be directly working on these.

She asked to speak with Mariya again, as she did not know who would be directly working on these. The Mistress of Magic allowed her into her office. “Lady Thalia, the laboratory is now ready for study. I’ve put my three best magicians on the research. The head of Divination is Master Theros, the Master of Earth is Master Asterix, and the Mistress of Enchantment is Mistress Elinor of Valgard.” You’ll have laboratory assistants and the like but they are in specialties that should help unlock this.”

“Perfect, we should get on then,” Thalia said and stood up again, “my thanks for sorting this out, I hope we can get to the bottom of it,” she cinclined her head respectfully and then headed towards where the lab was to get down to work.

The laboratory is a circular room two flights of stairs below the ground, about fifty feet across, the two orbs about a dozen feet apart and held up on a glass hemisphere so they can see them from all angles. A faint hum of defensive magic is constant in her ear as she gets to ground level. A large bespectacled man greets her, a wine stain on his shirt. It...doesn’t look particularly recent in honesty. “Mistress Thalia, I’m Asterix,” he said. “The wards are all in place so if this all goes up we should be the only ones going up with it.” Apparently that counts as comforting.
A woman in her mid sixties is inspecting the orb with the red tree with a powerful microscope. She grunts a few times and scratched notes onto a piece of paper as she slowly rotated it like a globe. The other orb was being inspected by a younger thin man who has almost carrot orange hair. He’s putting little drops of various liquids on the side of the orb and looking for reactions to occur.

Thalia looked at him and wondered if she really had put her best on this, she had specially asked nothing happen until she turned up, but she couldn’t exactly put the cat back in the bag, “that is good to know, if this goes badly a lot of lives could be lost. What are you discovered so far, Master of earth,” she didn’t mean it condescendingly, more to show she knew who he was,

“You mean what have we discovered,” Mistress Elinor said excitedly, pointing to herself and Theros. “We think we know what they are,” she said, “albeit not how they were created or how to disable the spells on them.” Theros handed her an antique book already opened to a page that had a drawing of the tree. “But we need you to help us confirm it.”
