Ceutinde drummed her fingers on the arm of the couch, thinking it over and just a bit jealous of Canelo. "Nothing I can do, unfortunately. But there are ways. We can take some of this," She hefted the purse back up, "And find an illusionist. Shouldn't be too pricy to just tweak your face a bit. Or more, if there's something else you want to try out, but not permanently. I know plenty of ladies and gentlemen who use them to preview something. New hair color or style, breast or penis transmutation, all that sort of thing. It's a lively little business for the well-heeled."

Silvia's eyes widened. "Wow! Yes, let's do that. I mean, I did think at first of using my sister's visit as an excuse to be in the restaurant but I'd rather not drag her into this. Besides, it will be fun to play at being someone else for the evening. We can make it seem like I'm a new patron you're trying to hook."

She frowned just a touch at the idea. "A prospective patron might be a bit high-profile. We don't want anyone actually looking into a wealthy benefactrix whom we invented out of whole cloth. Just an old friend might work. Or a new flame."

"Either of those will suit me. But where will we find an illusionist as short notice? I'll also need to run back to my lodgings and change into a pretty dress. I don't wear them often but I like to have a few for those high profile events. I've got a particularly ravishing red silk that I think you'll like." She grinned. "If the restaurant is as fancy as you say, I'll need it."

Ceutinde rose from her seat. "Yes, excellent idea. You get it and come back here, I'll find us a last-minute mage while you're gone. For all we know, there's already one in the building, achieving climax as we speak."

"Excellent. I'm looking forward to it." Silvia jumped up and hurried back to her lodgings.

**********
On another day, at another time, Justine was sitting downstairs in the lounge again, she was in the corner, her favorite spot, sipping juice. The last time she had wine she had let her sister go too far and she didn’t care to repeat that.
She had written a letter to Sylvia asking if she would be interested in a bit of an adventure. She hadn’t specified what exactly it was, but hinted at danger and daring. And so she sat and waited, drinking her juice.

Silvia arrived a while later. She had thought about sending a letter in response but realised she could get there just as quickly herself. She arrived in her trademark attire of a frilled shirt, snug trousers, high boots and the feathered hat.
"Justine," she exclaimed merrily. "I got your letter. Fortunately I had just come in from running a few errands and I saw the letter when I was just about to sit down and work on my latest ballad. You said you needed someone to help with something interesting."

Justine looked her up and down, thinking that as loud as Nigel was when speaking of himself, so was Sylvia in her clothes; they screamed I AM THE SKYLARK OF BASTION, which was no trouble usually. You know, when you didn’t want people to be curious about what you were saying. Fortunately, they were in Ceutinde’s, where most patrons were busy minding their own business...and by that, I mean very involved in the business of one of the Widow’s employees.
“Sit down please,” said Justine warmly as she featured to the seat across from her. “Drink?” She summoned a waitress so Sylvia could order. The waitress was there and gone again very quickly.
She swiftly cut to the chase. “So...I thought you might be able to help me with a little matter. I need to find out more about an important man. It would involve some trespassing and perhaps a little breaking and entering. I heard from mutual sources that you might be skilled in such things?”

Silvia grinned. "I've some experience in that area, yes. I was actually thinking of putting that sort of thing and focusing instead on my music, and maybe at some point travel into the Mists, but I'm always willing to help out a friend. I always make exceptions for friends. So...please, tell me about it."
She took a sip of wine.

Justine smiled and her whole face lit up like a child’s. She leaned in toward Sylvia and spoke in a much quieter tone of voice. “So the Mgistrate here...Reynald Aurelion. He’s involved in something like a conspiracy.” Her words came faster as she continued. “He has something to do with how I ended up in the Asylum. How I ended up with...her.” Her eyes weee as wide and wild as eyes could be. If one didn’t know her, they would have said she was crazy. Perhaps even if they did know her. “He’s part of it, if not the man behind it all. I need you to come with me to his house. Please.”

Though she had decided to drop Johanna's persona, Silvia still couldn't help wanting to do good in her life, and she liked Justine. "Of course I'll help," she said softly. Even more quietly she added "I've no great liking for magistrates myself, and this one sounds horrid. If I can be some help in avenging the wrongs done to you in the past, I'll be glad to do it. As long as the man himself is the only one who suffers from whatever you've got in mind."

Justine nodded. Perhaps it was a lie. His wife was a Lockhart. His wife had the same name as the man who had not only sanctioned but participated in the torments she and everyone else had suffered at the asylum. She was a Lockhart, same as the boy she had willingly given to juliette. “I agree.”
“Thank you for coming with me. Shall we say...tonight? And ummm...don’t wear that, please.” She gestured at Silvia’s ensemble. “Too recognizable. Well meet near his gate, but not too near.” She described the place. “Deal? It’s the new moon tonight so the dark will be on our side.”

"I have dark clothes," Silvia said. "I've plenty of experience in subterfuge. I'll bring weapons and lockpicks. I won't let you down, Justine."

Justine actually got up and hugged her. It was tight and perhaps longer than it should have been, but when she let go she nearly had tears on her eyes. “Thank you for believing in me. I’ll see you tonight.”
