Robert nodded and grunted agreement as he took a drink. “Lisa likes having a boy here. It takes all the pressure off her explaining when she will provide me with one. He’s learned too much from his mother,” he complained. “Too pliant by far. Pliable men are a curse to a strong house. Weak men can’t run hard businesses, can’t grow to see the sunlight without competitors choking them out.” He shook his head and turned back to her. “But enough about Michel. Tell me more about yourself,” he said. “I know you didn’t hat cl from an egg in a nest or else you’d have written a balls about it!” He chuckled at his own joke.

"You'd soon grow bored with me if I told you all my secrets, Robert." She took a sip of wine, slowly. "I like to be a mystery to most people, it's much more entertaining. I go where I please, and when I'm tired of a place, I move on. That's the most important thing. I have no desire to settle anywhere in particular."

“A nomad,” he said. “A wandering songstress meant to ensorcel the world. How romantic,” he concluded. The food started coming up. “Would you be willing to settle somewhere for a few hours?” He asked, look in at her over the steaming broth the rice had mostly absorbed, “for a new experience?”

"Perhaps, if I am suitably persuaded. A girl has to do something with her evenings, after all, and I do so love new experiences."
She took a mouthful of food. When she was done with it, she said "This really is remarkable."

“I’ll pass the compliments to the chef. He’s from the colonies,” he said as though the chef were a pet of some sort, “but what motivates you? Jewelry, adventure?” He ate an oyster with a spicy paste. “Perhaps something less tangible?” He inquired. “I doubt you would ever bore me.”

"I'm sure familiarity would make me less intriguing," she said. "I see adventure, and fame too. Every bard seeks fame, after all, and I'm sure most of us value fame even above wealth."

“They often go together,” he noted. “Fame and wealth and even, perhaps, intrigue. Would you care for dessert or does a sweeter wine sound better to finish our meal?”

"Dessert, please." She didn't want to drink too much. "Besides, I'm eager to see what else your chef can give us. But tell me, have you lived in the city long?"

“Let him decide,” Robert told the server, who scurried off. “About seven years, I think,” he said as he considered it. “I’d been here many times before that but I didn’t have the money to settle here until I discovered a renewable supply of Mistroses to sell to the Academy. Once I did, well, I pretty well got to name my price. It all fell into place after that. Once you get money doing one thing it makes it easier to bring in gold from anything else. I do wish I had a more adventurous bent but honestly I was never more than an indifferent swordsman.”

"Ah yes, an indifferent swordsman has no business on the battlefield," Silvia remarked, with the confidence of a skilled swordswoman. "If course, you could have travelled with a skilled bodyguard or two, and left any fighting in their hands, but it hardly matters now, unless you're of a mind to travel in the future. You certainly seem to have done exceptionally well. I have no need for a house of my own, but if I do ever buy one, I daresay it will be as delightful as this one."

Robert nodded. “My day’s passed for that, but no matter. I much prefer the hustle and bustle of the city life.” He looked her over. “I’m sure you could find a line of people to help you find a permanent place,” he said. “I have been considering a trip to Edysse and Vittoria to continue building some contacts there. I’m not sure I want to live next to the Mist forever.”

"Yes, I imagine it must get tiresome. Another city would be a little safer. I lived in Edysse at one time, a charming city. A...friend and I are planning to visit soon, actually."
She wasn't really sure if Nigel had earned the title of friend, yet, but she was going to be optimistic. After all, they had all been under a great deal of stress during the mission and Nigel had been much better company during dinner the other night.
"What does your wife think? Will she be happy to move as well?"

Robert shrugged. “She will manage. Vittoria is famed for its ladies of course so she’ll be happy enough.” Dessert cake out, a pineapple covered cake with some sort of fruit glaze drizzled over each of them. It smells like blood orange and perhaps lemon. “I do hope you enjoy this,” he said as he inspected it.

Her eyes lit up.
"I'm sure I will. It looks divine."
After her first bite, she said "It tastes divine too. I knew it would. Would it be difficult to upend your business here and start anew in a different city? Or would you hire someone to manage this place and open a new branch to run yourself?"

“Oh I already have a branch in Edysse and Valgard,” he said as he watched her enjoy the delicacy. “Expansion is every merchant’s goal after all. No, this would be for expanding into other interests. Horse raising, keeping my son in a safer place than here, being close to the court to gain influence and the like. The world is a treasure and I intend to have as much of it as possible.”
While Silvia ate the dessert she heard Lisa laughing in another room. Apparently she had a guest of her own to entertain.
