Where Ceutinde and her friends can make up rumors and hear the response to them.

One of Ceutinde’s favorite girls tells her that the word near her home is that the Distennian Mine is pinching out and two investors are considering backing out. That’s strangely specific to know but Ruby had presumably gotten it right from their mouths.

While Justine and Silvia play burglary, Carl enters Ceutinde’s office. “I have it on good authority,” he said, “that our dear friend Gregori is trying to hire some sort of killer to take care of a problem. We’re still not sure what the specific problem is. What’s worse is that a few weeks ago there was a treaty between several of the rival families in Edysse and so the hitters there have left to find greener pastures here, so there’s no shortage of good candidates.”

Ceutinde was reclined on a chaise-lounge, perusing a new book of rather terrible, if graphic, romantic fiction. She dogeared her page and set it down with a sigh. "And we're not lucky enough for the problem to be someone we don't care for. Odds that it's me?"

“Above zero,” Carl said shortly. “But it could be for those girls too. Or the investors wavering on monetary support. One never quite knows with people so...emotional.” He lit a pipe and took a puff. “And your other friend, Justine? Well, she’s got people asking questions about her in all the wrong places. Same with that songbird. They seem to be rather sought after in certain circles. Like ones with power-hungry institution lords and weapons dealers. That’s a lot of blades running around unaccounted for.”

"Perfect time for a working holiday to Edysse, then." Ceutinde say up straight before standing up. "Can you hold down the fort if I go on the lam for a few weeks? See if you can figure out who they're after?"

“Of course,” he said. “Make sure you have some good friends. You’re not a master of remaining inconspicuous,” he pointed out. “I can round some good people up if you’d like, to help out. Best to have a few killers of your own sometimes.”

"I'll be traveling with a band of renowned heroes and sleeping with a woman whose other personality carves her name into strangers for kicks," Ceutinde said with a wry smile as she tossed the book on her desk as the beginnings of a 'things to take' pile, "Why would I want to remain inconspicuous? But if it will calm you down, certainly. A few extra blades would not be unwelcome, I'm sure." Her eyes went wide as though she'd just remembered something. "Damn. Suppose I'll have to miss Nigel's fundraiser, or push it back."

Carl shook his head. “Best to have it in a bit, once this is sorted. If the Skylark is going with you it isn’t like she will be performing either.” He breathed in his own smoke then blew it through his nostrils. “It’ll give us time to make it a grander event too. Bring in some bored nobles from Bryndamare and maybe even Valgard or Azuria. Replay spice it up.”

"That's a good spin - I might not even have to apologize. I'll write him a letter and start packing." She leaned down and gave Carl an affectionate peck on the forehead. "Give yourself a nice bonus this month."

“Oh I will,” he said with a chuckle. “Your signature is easy to forge with enough practice.” He turned and scooted on out.
