Background:
Kiara grew up as the adored only daughter of army officer Captain Sabina Lacey. With her mother often on campaign she was largely raised by her grandparents in Brynademere. Colonel Lacey, himself a retired officer, doted on his granddaughter and planned to teach her his business of raising horses. Kiara grew up loving the horses and was more confident on horseback than when performing most other physical activites. Her clumsiness made her the despair of her grandmother - she was constantly bruised from falling over, her handwriting was atrocious, she couldn't dance, and was always picked last at school for sports teams because she couldn't catch the ball.
For the young Kiara, her mother's visits were the most exciting days of her childhood. She enjoyed hearing about Sabina's exploits but she was conscious from an early age of the fact that she didn't know her father. Sabina used to talk of him during her rare visits home, the dashing and heroic Nigel Thornheart, with whom she had shared a brief but passionate liaison. As a young child Kiara believed that one day her father would visit them but as the years passed she came to realise that either he didn't know of her existence, or knew and chose not to acknowledge her. By the time she was thirteen she had formed the plan of searching for him when she was old enough to do so.
Sabina died in battle when Kiara was fourteen. At first she attempted to devote her time to her studies and to the business but as the months passed she decided instead that she wanted to join the army and see something of the world, as her mother, grandfather and uncles had done before her. Colonel Lacey was dubious but he could deny Kiara nothing so he taught her all he could of weaponry, despite having previously abandoned the attempt years before. She struggled with melee weapons but proved to be a decent shot with firearms. When she turned eighteen, Colonel Lacey purchased her an ensign's commission and arranged for a post as a staff officer. Kiara is well-liked by her fellow officers but some of them have been known to laugh at her clumsiness. At present, her duties have taken precedence but she hopes in time to find a chance to track down her absent father.
