Ceutinde nodded, slightly annoyed at the song about a wellerman - whatever that was - now running through her head. "Archimedes is right. Our first duty is to save her. We learn what we can in the process and go from there." She bent back down to the little girl. "Stick out your tongue and say 'ahh', dear." She commenced a thorough examination.

The girl’s tongue is swollen but she manages to get it outside her mouth. Her temperature is cool but not uncomfortably so, and outside the skin tone and temperature she seems mostly normal, until Ceutinde sees that two of her upper incisor teeth seem to have developed a strange, serrated appearance. It is subtle at first glance but once noticed it is impossible to ignore.

Ceutinde stood to check the teeth in the corpse, while asking the girl, "Sweetheart, how long has it been before you started feeling sick?"

The girl’s glassy eyes rolled up and right as she thought. “A week and a half?” She said. “Maybe that. Something close.” Archimedes handed her a potion that would dull her pain a bit. “But I think Mister Arthur got sick a week before that. He was a fishing captain.”
Inspecting the other corpse, she discovers the teeth are only the slightest bit misshapen, but she noticed no other irregularities short of being bone dry, no trace of moisture at all.

"Anything strange that happened, before all this? Anything at all. No wrong answers. Strange visitors to the village, odd weather, bad dreams?"

The girl shook her head. “The fishermen all came back from a big trip to catch...I don’t know, mackerel I think, and they said they went farther than they usually do. The captain got sick a few days after they got back, I guess.” She sniffled. “I bet everyone else is sick by now too.”

"I'm sure everything will be just fine, dear..." Ceutinde lied, "What is your name?"

“Stella,” she said. “I feel sleepy. Can I take a nap now?” She yawned. Everyone around instinctively held their breaths.

"Of course, Stella." Ceutinde tousled the girl's hair. "Someone will stay in here to make sure you're all right. Just ask if you wake up and want anything. You're not hungry? Thirsty?"

She shook her head. “The priests gave me some bread and water,” she said. “I really just want sleep.” An attendant comes in and whispered.
“We set up a room and it’s sealed off by an abjurer. It should be safe for tonight.”

"Sleep well, Stella. I'll see you when you wake up." Ceutinde rose and turned to the attendant. "Take her there. Keep an observer at all times. Lay the other one to rest." She glanced toward the gaggle of her companions that had followed them down, and the two doctors, and said in a low voice, "Well. I'm thinking a curse. Something the fishermen dredged up?"

Silvia didn't know much about curses or evil magic but it frightened her much less than ordinary illnesses. Curses could be broken and evil sorcery thwarted.
"Maybe," she said. "But how, and why, and who could be responsible? Curses don't come from nowhere."

The doctors shook their heads. “If it is, then there’s no telling what caused it. The seas teem with things we may never understand.” Archimedes frowned as Stella was wheeled toward her room, already resting her head on a pillow. “But whatever it is, there’s evidence it’s transmissible, so it has to be investigated.”

"Yes, of course. Send someone to the House of Mythan by the West Gate." She looked toward Silvia and the others. "An extra pair of eyes couldn't hurt, if someone wouldn't mind. Anything strange with the bodies, items the priests found, that sort of thing. Meanwhile I need to do some research, and my little library probably won't be enough."

Silvia nodded. "I can go to the House of Mythan, if you like. Or, if someone else would rather go, I'm happy to visit the library instead."
