Biography: Samuel Ravenhurst was a bartender and his wife Nerissa was a local medium of small repute. Together, they begat seven children whilst attempting to survive the Bastion slums. Somewhere in the middle of the Ravenhurst brood was a plucky lad named Geoffrey who spent his days getting into fights with local bullies. His parents were not a happy couple, and the boy grew up seeing more suffering than happiness. Two of his siblings passed from illness, and one was eventually murdered over cards and drink. Geoffrey, demonstrating a keen intelligence and thirst for justice, was selected to join the City Watch.
Geoffrey never quite became the hero he always wanted to be. His inherited talent for communing with the dead gave him an advantage in solving murders and other morbid crimes, allowing him to speed up the ranks of the City Watch. But even in a world of magic and slowly creeping doom, society can still be divided between the Haves and the Have Nots. Having eventually risen to the rank of Captain, he inevitably spent more time defending the interests of powerful nobles rather than those who actually needed his aid...
Then one day he caught a certain high family's son involved in an extremely sordid Mist ritual trying to sacrifice an elven baby to Estos in hopes of... immortality or something. It wasn't a crime where motive was actually necessary. Geoffrey had plenty of witnesses and evidence under his belt. The Captain was ready to play Nigel Thornheart and be an actual hero for once...
When suddenly he was pulled into a private room by the Lord Mayor of Bastion, the Lord Commander of the Bastion City Watch, and the father of the ne'er-do-well he had caught red-handed in infant sacrifice. They argued that such a public trial would do nothing but lead to class revolt by the many immigrants that make up Bastion. Then made it clear that it was in the best interests of all concerned that Captain Ravenhurst should sweep the matter under the rug and let the idiot boy go for the sake of the greater good. Geoffrey politely scoffed and asked how a well-connected child murderer being allowed to roam free was for the better good. Then the culprit's father assured him that his son would be harshly dealt with, presumed sent to the old Lockhart Asylum with the rest of high society's fuck ups.
Against his own conscience, the Captain finally agreed... and shortly thereafter left the City Watch as a very decorated, very wealthy, and and very disgusted retiree. That next year was spent in self-loathing, drinking heavily and slowly destroying his new townhouse. Then one day a former colleague on the Watch approached him... would the legendary Captain be so kind to help him with a small case that was perplexing the entire force?
Thus began Geoffrey Ravenhurst's second career as a private investigator. He was independently wealthy, no longer a member of a corrupt institution, and could choose his own cases... soon, other potential clients began approaching Ravenhurst and before long, he had developed a bit of a reputation as a hired fixer for those whose requests tugged the strings of either his heart or purse.
