Background: Damien was born into the lap of luxury in the center of the Empire. It took three years before it became patently obvious that he did not belong. As a small child he sneaked out of his palatial manor, and was discovered playing with the urchins behind an illicit gambling hall. For the next fifteen years he proceed to drive his parents mad by sneaking away at will, they desperately tried to make him into the good little heir, but he resisted again and again. He slept through his education and avoided learning the sword and the pen. He would slip away and spend days living with the local thieves guilds.
Damien's exploits endeared him to the local outlaws though. The stories told about him here numerous and each one more wild. It was claimed that he lost his virginity to a math tutor inside the imperial vault. Other's claimed that he had stolen and made copies of every noble's seal in the entire Empire, and that was why Damien's friends were always getting pardons for their many crimes. Another story told of how another thief had grown jealous of Damien's exploits, and made a plan to murder him. Yet after capturing the young Damien, the other thief was talked instead into being Damien's new partner, and the two were now closer then brothers.
Damien's life continued like this into his twenties, and would have continued on in this effort, but his father grew ill and passed away. Damien was suddenly Comte, and suddenly slipping away no longer had the same thrill. He went to the Emperor, and asked to be disinherited so his younger sister could take his seat. The Emperor had long despised Damien, and refused out of hand. Damien went home disappointed but came up with a plan. Later that evening he returned to the Imperial Palace and took the crown jewels. When the crown was found in Damien's belonging the Emperor had no choice, and exiled him to Bastion.
That is how the greatest Thief in the entire world came to be living in a backwater land to find his way.
