Background:
The de Vair family was pretty important and influential...until they weren't.
Lord Cosmo de Vair was not only an important merchant who traded goods along all the main roads in Innuria, but also a shrewd advisor to the Emperor. His wife, Wanda, was a socialite who threw the best parties in the region. They had a home in the capitol and an estate along the Vittoria peninsula. Their children attended the best academies money could buy. All in all, things seemed to be great for the family.
And then Cosmo backed the wrong contender. Plans for a coup were discovered: all risky politcial business. His empire was dismantled and divided up. He and his son lost their heads. His wife and the other children were sent to the Lockhart Asylum. With all their pleading and screaming, it was almost as though they belonged there. Lady Wanda did not last long: she was marked for lobotomy. Justine was luckier. After a long time in solitary confinement with nothing but a tattered copy of a Nigel Thornheart novel for company (which was eventually judged too stirring for a girl of her age and thrown in the bin), she was judged sane enough for her twin to join her in her cell. The two girls clung to eachother for comfort and whispered stories and dreams of being rescued by a flame-haired adventurer and his namesake cannon.
It is a strange thing to spend one's formative years in an insane asylum. One could argue that it was quite barbaric...and yet there were other young people there. Justine befriended a strange boy a few years her elder: Demetrius. Their friendship grew quickly as they were among the few in the asylum who weren't actually crazy. Perhaps it was his company that slowly turned the sisters against eachother. Still, the three of them hatched an escape plan together. It would not do to rot in the asylum, especially as Justine feared that being kept in such a place was slowly driving her mad.
They succeeded, for the most part. Justine's sister did not make it out. For the past several years, Justine and Demetrius have eked out a living for themselves; avoiding the law and living in the shadows.
