"Yes. It is like... when two men sneak up on sleeping dragon to steal treasure. One man always lets friend go first to inspect treasure out of generous heart, but in truth, he just wants to see if dragon is still awake and would rather be furthest from the dragon if it is still awake.

Tears welled in Ceutinde's eyes at the implication, and she reached out to take his hand. "She sounds like a remarkable woman. I should very much like to hear more about her on the trip."
At hearing Konrad she dried her eyes and lifted her own glass in turn. "I don't have much of a standard of comparison. Lilomeon never gave me much detail about his...jobs. I always assumed he thought I'd worry less that way. But truth be told, so far as I know, they might always be vague."

Silvia strode onto the deck, bright-eyed with anticipation and singing the chorus of the famous seafaring song, Heart of Oak1, which she had been taught many years ago by her family's house bard.
"Heart of oak are our ships, heart of oak are our men;
We always are ready, steady, boys, steady!
We'll fight and we'll conquer again and again."
She stopped by the table and smiled lazily at the company. "This is such a lovely idea, Lady Ceutinde. Thank you for inviting us."
In another universe, Heart of Oak is the official anthem of the British Royal Navy and various Commonwealth Navies.

"Silvia darling, think nothing of it! After all, I couldn't exactly keep it secret even if I'd wanted to snub someone." She giggled to make it obvious she was joking. "Konrad was just saying - have you two met, by the way? - he was saying that he thought the...job offer last night was a bit," she waved a hand vaguely, "less than forthcoming in detail. Is that normal for this sort of thing?"

“Silvia and I are well-acquainted,” he said giving the bard a warm smile. “I have enjoyed her performances on multiple occasions.” He told their elf host. “But I’m also curious as to her take on our benefactors as well.”

"It was a little odd," Silvia agreed, briefly returning Konrad's smile. "There wasn't a great deal of explanation, honestly. That doesn't bother me - I'm here for the adventure, more so than the gold - but I imagine it bothered many members of our company. As far as I'm aware, adventurers would normally be given more details about their task at the beginning, and an opportunity to actually plan the task. But you should probably ask the more experienced adventurers on the other ship when we make landfall. They'll know more about such things than I do."
And besides, she couldn't exactly talk about a lot of the tasks she had been employed upon.

By virtue of his naturally solitary life, he had made few personal connections in his life, so few they could be counted on the hand Ceutinde had just taken. When she let go, he held his hand under his own like discretely acquired treasure. "I have never heard of this place. And there are almost none who have traveled as far and wide, or studied the ancient words as intently." This wasn't a boast, considering he was a master of two schools of magic and had traveled further than any man had in centuries. Indeed, he had nearly maxed out a knowledge roll attempting to uncover secret information and alas, the Forgotten God still found him wanting.

Kjell slipped to the table during the discussion and helped herself to an apple, observing the bard and the Konrad as they spoke.

Ceutinde simply gave Kjell a smile when she arrived. Being too friendly might spook her.
"Well, it seems we are all on an even footing, then. With no idea what we're really heading into." She took a sip of the wine that had appeared at some point. "At least my worries about being at a disadvantage to the rest of you aren't panning out."

"How could you be at at disadvantage?" Silvia asked. "It's your ship."
She grinned at Kjell and Herneiros. "Good day to you both. I don't believe we've met, but you may have heard of me. Silvia Raizer, better known as the Skylark of Bastion." She bowed to each of them in turn.

Ceutinde crossed her arms and leaned forward on the table. "Well, that pompous ass up and said it last night. And pompous ass though he might be, he wasn't wrong. I'm no Reclaimer. I tend to Reclaimers' medical, mental, and sexual needs. Until I decided to try and make a dead man proud."

I tend to Reclaimers' medical, mental, and sexual needs. Until I decided to try and make a dead man proud." Konrad nodded firmly. This was a motivation he could understand. “I too have no right to claim expertise. But I also know the desire to prove oneself to the dead is a more powerful motivation than golf or silver.”

"I thought most of us weren't Reclaimers either," Silvia pointed out. "Maybe they're looking to recruit us, but I certainly haven't signed their paperwork. But we're good enough for this, all of us, else we wouldn't even be here. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. That's what I do when I am due to perform after a living legend. I simply remind myself that I am still on the journey he or she has already finished, that I will be as good as them one day, and probably better."

"I have been to Bastion." He said in response to the Skylark. "Strong walls. Brave people. I have seen their failed settlements and sifted through the bones of their Reclaimers as they try to claw their way through the Mist, but still... a brave people."

She looked hard at the strange man, unsure whether he was being serious or speaking in metaphor. He was like nobody she had ever met.
"Yes, they are a brave people," she agreed. "It sounds like you might know more about our destination than most, sir. Maybe you could talk to us about it."
