Zavier gulped and then added, “if it helps any the captain has gone through its waters before and she’s been fine.” He glanced about and picked at a vegetable.

Kjell scratched an eyebrow with the good fingers of her left hand as she digested the new information. She’d done her fair share of messenger-shooting in the past and it was an impulse she needed to shed.
“Well, then it is a good thing we came on two ships. If worst comes to worst, one could serve as a decoy,” she said, looking at the boy with a slight frown. “How many times has your captain passed this place?”

Konrad cut his steak with precision, and savored each piece, realizing it was likely to be one of the last such meals for a great while.
"compliments to the chef, and many thanks for your generosity. At least we shall be fat and juicy for the serpent." he chuckled.

I think she’s done it more often though. There’s a smuggler’s haven beyond it she’s visited and the fish you can catch past the Red Current are really expensive so now and then some down on his luck fisherman will pay to get sorcerercod or baby dragon turtles.”

Herneiros grabbed a crab leg and began breaking the shell. "Well... there is nothing to be done for it." He looked around the table before setting down the crab.
"Very well. I shall tell funniest joke my heart's father ever told me, and he is two hundred and fifty-eight years old. Then we shall be very good friends."
The Huntsman coughed before presenting his joke.
"What is the difference between a wife's clitoris and the lost treasure fleet of Emperor Erastes?"
Herneiros gave a dramatic pause. "Husband will actually look for lost treasure fleet."

Kjell rubbed the bridge of her nose and helped herself to more wine. So many comedians on a single expedition.

"Aha! Kjell performs the rubbing of the nose. We are now officially past most awkward phase of working relationship."
Herneiros began eating his crab.

Silvia rolled her eyes at the terrible joke - any man's inability to satisfy his lover was no joking matter, particularly if they were married - and reached for some steak.
"I would like to see the sea serpent," she said. "Preferably not if it's attacking us, but I'd like to see it all the same. But I'm sure we're equal to it. We wouldn't be here if we weren't heroes in the making."

Ceutinde giggled at the joke, despite having heard easily a dozen variations on it. "You know, Herneiros, the House of Peace and Respite has recently begun a series of courses designed to eliminate the unfortunate lack of anatomical and other knowledge that leads to stereotypes like that. Available for all species and age groups - we all have things to learn. Frankly, the state of education on these matters is horrendous." She turned to the young navigator. "It's especially important at your age, Zavier, when your whole life is ahead of you and good habits can still be formed easily."

"I find your confidence inspiring," he offered instead. "But all the same, I think we wouldn't be badly off if we arrived unhindered."

We're supposed to experience danger, and overcome it, becoming fast friends in the process. I can hardly write a song about us sailing happily to our destination and back again, without a few adventures along the way. The journey will be dull as ditch water if nothing exciting happens."

Zacier’s head leaned alllll the way to the right, like a puppy seeking clarification on why he was being admonished. “Ummm...can I pick my instructor?” He finally said.

Herneiros sipped his vaguely described alcoholic beverage before replying. "I should also like to see this serpent, but perhaps not so close."
He turned to their hostess and declared in Elvish,
"In the secret cave was her treasure, Betwixt the slick walls it purrs, Through the tunnel came the sea breeze And shook all the nearby oak trees"
It was of course a classic piece of Elven poetry, though Herneiros had left out the bawdier bits that usually made human translators blush.
"I assure you," Herneiros declared in English, "My education is already quite extensive."

"adventure, pleasure, danger, my lady, I assure you I am here for them all," he replied, "Although I suspect Nigel over on the other boat would tell you you don't need to actually see the beast to write about it." He grinned at the dig, before listening to the massive man's surprisingly elegant poetry, even though he could not make out the words, which may have been another dirty joke for all he knew.
