Jean's gesture confused Silvia but she didn't let it show on her face. "I'm looking forward to it," she said. She had been obliged to leave her dagger concealed in her gown in the changing room but she was confident that she could handle any trouble.
"This is very exciting."

Jean began singing a jaunty sea change in a surprisingly clear voice as he led them out the door. “It’s a couple minute walk,” he said. “The shallows here are no good for a proper vessel.” They see a hill about two hundred meters away and he strolls on toward it, occasionally spinning at an exceptionally inappropriate verse of the song. At the top of the small hill the women see his ship, a red-hulled vessel with a more than a dozen guns on each side at least, a double-decked nightmare vessel. It looked like it would have little trouble destroying most warships without a fight, much less the fat-bodies merchant vessels that frequented the seas laden with goods. “Meet my wife Mathilda!” He said with a cackle.

"Wow." Silvia managed to maintain Roxanne's breathy voice as she behelf the ship. It truly did impress her. "She's a beauty," she said. "How long have you had her?"

Jean grinned at her. “We’ve been sailing these seas now for six years,” he said. “I watched her for a long time and then one day,” he made a chef’s kiss motion with his fingers. “I put a ring on it as they say.” He put his arm through both ladies’. “But fear not, she is not a jealous one.” The women note only a few sailors they catch glimpses of going around. They’re not dirty or disorganized like most criminals they’re familiar with. “Come on aboard my friends. The best place to watch a sunset is on the stern of a ship. With new friends and plenty of libation, mind you,” he added unnecessarily.

"Oh, of course," Silvia said. She was already wondering how she could find a way to tell him that she wasn't really the airhead she was pretending to be. "Do you know Gregori and Robert well? And Jon?"

He grinned. “If I did I wouldn’t have run off with their ladies so swiftly, would I have?” He asked with a devilish grin. “Robert I know some. Gregori hired new once to guard a special shipment, and Jon, well, Jon is someone I’ve no desire to annoy, but every now and again it’s simply unavoidable.” He chuckled and his jewelry and weapons rattled. “But pirates don’t make their legend by doing what’s polite, do they?”

"Not at all. This has all happened so fast. We only met the gentlemen tonight. We were supposed to be having dinner but instead we're having a grand adventure."
It was not lost upon Silvia that they hadn't actually had dinner yet - apparently everyone wanted them to get drunk instead.
"I'm just so...taken aback. I'm used to being noticed, but I'm not used to being swept into mysterious locations."

“Ahhh you two are hungry! What cads,” he said dismissively. “When we get aboard I shall have sole and vegetables and blood orange salads made. My ladies deserve a meal as beautiful as themselves!”

"That sounds delightful," Silvia said. "I love fish, and the blood oranges shall make the dish refreshing." She smiled at Ceutinde. "Honestly, that sounds better than whatever we would have got at Anselmo's. Honestly, sir, your taste in food is as good as your taste in clothing. Can I keep you?"
She realised that some of Silvia had started to seep through. Jean probably shouldn't be Roxanne's type but he was definitely Silvia's.

Ceutinde gave a quiet tsk to her friend and joked, "Now now, Roxy. Don't go offering to buy the cow before we've both had a chance to taste the milk. I might make you share."

Silvia giggled. "I wouldn't mind sharing. I'm only playing, though. But still, I thought charming pirates belonged in books, not in real life."

Jean grinned broadly. “Plenty enough Jean for everyone!” He said. The pirate captain waltzed down the hill and got on the dock leading to his warship. “Ponce! Three sole fillets over butter and white wine now please! No time to waste!” A porthole opened and a hand came out then raised a thumb and withdrew back into the bowels of the vessel. “Now come on ladies! Fortune and dining await!”

Silvia smiled at Ceutinde. "This is so much fun. I wish I hadn't committed to playing the role of an airhead, though. I'm starting to lose brain cells," she whispered. "Sorry to drag you all the way down here but I like this fellow. I like him a lot, actually. He's no good for Roxanne but..." She sighed. "Ah well, we can at least have a nice dinner."

Ceutinde put an arm around Silvia and led them down the pier toward the ship, whispering, "Don't go falling in love with him. We hardly know the first thing about him. He might well be the one selling girls in Asanar." She raised her voice as they got on the gangplank, "She truly is a lovely vessel, Captain. How many crew does she run with?"

“She doesn’t run!” Jean said in his merry tone. “But I have about fifty ne’er do wells in my crew. But that’s just my Mathilda!” He said, then didn’t elaborate. “But Paolo is my hidden gem. A true chef fit for an emperor!” He got onto the gangplank and offered Each one his hand to get them aboard. The ship has no evidence of a crew of fifty; right now the top deck is completely devoid of people.
