“No idea,” the captain said, as his eyes began glowing with the same electric purple as the island’s. Konrad and Justine and evening Herneiros’s eyes begin matching the rising city in the sea as well. “What the hell...?” The island and its attendant beasts are only about two hundred feet down now, slightly southwest of them.

Konrad looked at the others, eyes glowing, and blinked rapidly. “Captain... what course are we on? I think we should have someone double check the helmsman, making sure to steer us well away from that Island...”

The lights were mesmerizing, blinding, and...revealing.
Justine blinked and found herself standing at the railing. She was shaking a little, even though she wasn’t really cold. Her vest was gone and everything was alight in violet. She checked for her sword, which was at her waist where she had left it. Sometimes it wasn’t. The sky was fully dark. How much time has been lost? At least an hour or two.
“What is that in the water?!” She exclaimed. For lack of familiarity with the other passengers, and not seeing Ceutinde, she approached Konrad and the Captain. “Why are your eyes glowing? Why is everything glowing?”

Herneiros was dazzled by the sight of the glowing city beneath them. "No idea! Beautiful, isn't it?!"
As a hunter of the forgotten, bizarre, and terrible,, Herneiros was a natural sucker for haunted architecture and inexplicable phenomena.

“It is but...is it like the shrimp?” She was more cautious about leaning over the railing after what she had seen happen to poor unmourned intern Lenny.

Konrad looked at the others, eyes glowing, and blinked rapidly. “Captain... what course are we on? I think we should have someone double check the helmsman, making sure to steer us well away from that Island...” “We’re heading north,” the captain said. “But if that thing surfaces too fast the waves could capsize us. Speaking of...” he turned to a sailor. “Close the gun ports! Seal the ship!” The sailors ran to make sure everything was secured belowdecks. “I ain’t never seen anything like this. I thought halfway the god damn thing was a myth.”

Konrad watched as the sailors scurried to do as instructed. He felt rather useless on this boat, and longed to do something helpful. He looked down at his chest, and dabbed uselessly at the growing blotch of rust-brown stain, and looked over at de Vair with a sullen look.
"Let me know if I can help," he told the captain, breaking his gaze, "Even if I have to stick an oar in the water, I'd like to get away from that thing as quick as we can."

Kjell was well aware getting back from the railing would have been the smart thing to do, but... how often did one get to see a giant city rise up from a trench. On top of that, people's eyes were now glowing, too. She brought her right hand down to her belt and pricked her pinky on the blade of her axe to make sure she wasn't hallucinating.

Kjell now needs a tetanus shot. The captain shakes his head at Konrad. “I...it’s far too late to run.” Konrad can’t help but notice that the purple he sees everywhere and the pattern below matches something he saw once, if he could only remember...

“It is but...is it like the shrimp?” She was more cautious about leaning over the railing after what she had seen happen to poor unmourned intern Lenny. "I very much doubt it. Those were just unusually large wildlife. Curious but not particularly unusual. Underwater glowing cities, however, are most unnatural and could not possibly exist without the assistance of magic or willpower. Although... it is possible some ignorant civilization accidentally built a city on top of a living colossus... it is not the strangest tale I have ever heard that turned out to be true."

Zavier nodded then shook his head suddenly. “Maybe another evening,” he said. “I can tell you how I met the dragon I tried to draw power from. It’s...i was different then.” "Yes, maybe," she said. She was about to say something else when she realised that the sea was glowing. People around her began to talk of danger. She looked at Zavier, to ask what they should do now, and then she realised that his eyes were glowing as well. "Everyone's eyes are glowing," she said. "But not yours! What's happening? Are we being attacked by sorcery?"

Konrad became entranced, staring at the purple symbol. He knew that he recognized it... yes. yes of course. It was obvious now. Once he realized it, he could not unseen it. "By the Emperor's fuzzy purple cloak," he exclaimed, moving forward to stand on the railing. "How can that be?" He wondered aloud.

No one knew what the rich noble was on about.
Somewhat ironically, the serpents are not the first thing to appear. A tower made of some strange stone pokes through the waves, followed by old buildings predating anything they’ve ever seen. The purple is even brighter when exposed to the air, sending lights shining through the fog like the Vegas strip up to the clouds. Coral grew off the great carapace and the wrecks of ships dotted the ragged terrain.

Justine nodded. She had seen and heard many strange things (indeed her head still hurt from whatever Strange thing had happened last) but this was unlike anything else. She joined him tentatively at the railing. “What do you think happened to all the people? Drowned or...worse?” She turned her head again to Konrad. “Do you see something we don’t?” She asked, following it a moment later by another: “Goodness, what happened to your shirt?”
