“I find that unlikely, but it’s possible. I don’t know much about magic or enchanted artifacts.” She reached out to touch the scale to see if it was warm or cold.
“Smart thinking to call out like that. We were worried but, well,” she shrugged. “We should send a message to the Odyssey, lest they provoke it somehow.” She thought specifically of Nigel then. In all his books, he was fairly trigger happy. It stood to reason he would be in life as well.

The scale is iridescent and changes colors every time your head changes its angle. Kjell sees it as a different set of colors due to having a slightly wider range of vision than humans. To her it looks like lightning striking a still lake. It’s hard but leathery and about an inch thick. It’s too heavy for any of them to carry alone but someone like Nigel probably could for a few steps. The back of it is slate grey and harder and less pliable. The serpent looks over the Odyssey from a distance but seems placid and unconcerned by their presence.

Kjell raised an eyebrow as it quickly became evident every member of this expedition had at some point won an Olympic medal at jumping to conclusions. She kept her eyes on the serpent, not that there was much else she could do at this point.

Silvia longed for the creature to come back. She had experienced many glorious events but nothing compared to the magic of the serpent's arrival, nor the beauty of its scales. "It's a precious treasure," she whispered. "We must keep it safe, and signal to the other ship that all seems to be safe."

Kjell chuckled to herself and shook her head. "This thing doesn't give two shits about your Imperial gibberish or a magic bauble," she said, sounding just a tad amused. She'd forgotten how naive humans from cities could be. "I don't think anything we could do would make it... not safe."

She'd forgotten how naive humans from cities could be. "I don't think anything we could do would make it... not safe." "nevertheless," Konrad replied, "we communicated with it and received a favorable result." Frankly he was just glad that Thornheart hadn't tried to seduce one of the things yet. "Zavier, you should signal to the other ship. Tell them the beasts will not harm them as long as they do nothing aggressive."

Zavier points to the captain, who nods and makes the signals. They all hoped a stray cannon didn’t go off. “Should we...should we check out the city?” Zavier asked quietly.

Silvia grinned. "Definitely. There's no way I'm missing out on this." She patted the hilt of her sword. "Do you know anything about this place?"

Herneiros was quietly sketching it. He really wasn't a trained artist, but frankly, he knew perhaps no one else would come this way again.

7. He accidentally pokes his own finger trying to draw in the rolling sea. A child on adderall would do better work. It causes one point of damage to anyone who even looks at it.

Justine glanced over and cringed. Not even Herneiros’ mother could praise that artwork. He was no...whoever that guy was who illustrated the Thornheart novels.
She choked a little on the words, but managed to say, “Good effort.”

Herneiros frowned. "Perhaps I can pass it off as modern art in Bastion gallery..." He put the paper away and turned his attention to her. "You are far too polite to be evil doppelganger. Welcome back."

Justine laughed nervously. "Thanks. Do you mean..." She could recall glimpses: the image of her twin, the pen in her hand, her vest...where had it gone? "It was my sister. I'm sorry. I hope nothing horrible happened." She eyed the giant serpent as they spoke.

He followed her gaze. "Oh no. I think Nedrassian Serpent is rather beyond her influence. Though I should tell you she seemed rather friendly with Mister Konrad."

She frowned and glanced at Konrad and his bloody shirt. Had her sister done that? If she had, he was taking it remarkably well. “He and I have known eachother a long time. Not well or deeply, but we know eachother. Maybe...”
Well, maybe Juliette was trying to get something they both might enjoy for a change.
