Herneiros covered his eyes. He has spent so long in the darkness and fog, the Wild Huntsman had little comprehension of such grand magic.
"It's... I can barely look on it but I think it might be keeping something somewhere alive... can you smell that? That's definitely some sort of Abjuration, but also necromancy and animancy..."
He tried to look around. "I have a bad feeling those dragons are still around in a sense..."

“Not the dragons,” Zavier said quietly, barely audible in response to the Huntsman. “It’s what killed them...”

“Not the dragons,” Zavier said quietly, barely audible in response to the Huntsman. “It’s what killed them...” "Possibly... but if it's not powered by the souls of dragons... then what could they use?" He covered his mouth as he recalled how empty the island was...

"No chance this was all a plot to get us here and use us as fodder for this ancient machine thing, is there?" Archie popped up behind Herneiros, taking a good look at the room's architectonic style. "Of course, I doubt a dozen souls of random fellas would be enough for that."

As he could not take the cannon down the stairs, Nigel turned the artillery around so it was facing the direction they had come down the bridge and could defend their rear in case of attack. He took his shield off its attached spot on the side and made his way down the stairs at a brisk pace, cutting to the front of the group.

Relieved that the others hadn't got too far in, Silvia headed further in, as quickly as she could whilst also being careful. She paused a few times to look at the fresco on the floor in awe. It was hard to tear her eyes away but she managed to do so. and approached Elise. "It's magnificent," she said. “Nothing like it anywhere I’ve seen,” Elise agreed, for once no trace of sarcasm in her voice. As Nigel headed down the ramp into the bowels of the temple he saw the now-lit descent lasts about two hundred feet down, far below the surface of the earth. Before that though there’s a massive doorway about two thirds of the way down and on the west side, with a vault like door that dwarfs even the largest banks he’s ever heard of. Down at the bottom the light illuminated another open tunnel that led north but there’s no view of what it might hide.

"I wish I had a talent for painting," Silvia admitted. "I'd love to take a picture of this home with me." She shrugged airily. "It doesn't matter. I've plenty of other skills. Anyway, I came round this side for a reason. I found this rod in the other side. Like a magic wand, you know? It glows pretty colours and affects the things in the temple. I didn't want to take it outside in case that was a bad idea, so I gave it to Kjell for now, but I think you should come take a look at it. Will you come?"

Elise looked down into the pit and then nodded. “They’ve got plenty of mages here. I guess I can come. You said it changes colors...” she frowned. “Leaving it inside was a good idea. It’s probably what directs that death ray, gun to my head. Let’s go,” she trotted off, but let Silvia lead the way.

"I thought it might collapse the entire thing with Damien and Kjell inside if I brought it with me." Silvia headed back the way she had come, leading Elise to the open door and then around the side of the temple to the entrance they had found earlier.

Herneiros followed only a few paces after Nigel, pondering the nature of humanity all the while as he he asked himself difficult questions only the gods could answer. The Wild Huntsman needed to see this through.

As they head down the stairs, the adventurers near the vault entrance which is about four meters high and three across. Thalia, Archimedes and Herneiros feel a strong abjuration magic. Leading the forty feet farther down to the bottom the starlike lights change color to a light blue. The bottom is still forty feet below and they see a strange grey sludge that radiates necromantic energy splattered on the walls and on the door that leads north down at the very bottom of the structure. The vault door is on the south side so they have a half rotation to go prior to reaching the end of the ramp.

Tehol looks around in wonder. Then notices the sludge against the walls, being oblivious to their magical aura he mutters aloud. “I wonder what this stuff is.”

"It reeks of necromancy... so probably something that used to be alive..."
Herneiros sniffed the air like a hound. "And abjuration..." He sniffed again. "Yes... probably a protection spell... but to keep something in or out?"

"There seemed to be a couple cells with the other group." He mentions off offhandedly. "Some big doors with intricate locks from what I saw through Korabas' eyes. He was more interested in finding any mice or vermin then actually examining the room for me."
